LIFE SKILLS TRAINERS
POSITION SUMMARY: Life Skills Trainers (full and part time), teaches a range of daily living and coping skills to all House of Ruth program participants (women and/or children). Completes tasks to ensure the well-being of the women and/or children receiving services and maintains effective operations of the program. Hours vary and include evenings, overnight and weekends.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engages the women and/or children to develop rapport, support case management goals and assist in meeting their needs. Provides crisis intervention and intervenes during an incident. Provides positive role modeling. Conducts in-takes.
- Develops and facilitates skill and/or support groups. Teaches a range of daily living, coping and social skills to women and/or children (emotional self-management, parent/child interactions, problem solving, safety planning, communication, cooking, budgeting, time management, organizational skills).
- Maintains a safe, secure and non-violent environment for all occupants. Regularly monitors the entire building and immediate area and the activities and behavior of the occupants. Effectively manages all emergencies by following procedures.
- Completes apartment and /or room inspections and bed checks. Reports maintenance problems. Organizes and conducts on-site and community-based social/recreational activities. Directly assists women and/or children in completing tasks. Provides child care as needed.
- Monitors medications and completes related documentation. Conducts urine toxicology screens and completes related documentation. Conducts evacuation drills and completes records. Transports individuals to appointments and activities. Completes shopping trips. Distributes supplies and materials. Maintains organized, clean work environment.
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED and several years related experience (domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health issues).
AGENCY: House of Ruth helps women, children and families in greatest need and with very limited resources to build safe, stable lives and achieve their highest potential. We serve women, children and families who are striving to overcome domestic violence, homelessness, mental health disorders and substance abuse. At each of our 13 locations in Washington, DC, House of Ruth is working with more than 600 women and children at any given time. Six of our 11 service-enriched locations house 74 families comprising 74 mothers and their children. Five of our locations for women house 109 women. Seventy-six children are provided developmental day care while their families are provided case management assistance at Kidspace, a child and family development center.
